How can I encourage healthy eating and
exercise habits in my child?

healthy habits kids childrenHelping your child develop a healthy eating and exercise habit takes time, organization and dedication. It can be very hard for parents, especially if they weren’t brought up with these good habits themselves. But the good thing is any effort is also beneficial for your child. Here are some tips that will help you instill healthy eating and exercise habits in your children:

    • Serve healthy meals at home explain to your child why the meal is healthy. Point to the different healthy foods that your child likes to eat and reinforce good reasons for eating them.
    • Take your child grocery shopping with you. Allow them to pick healthy fruits and vegetables to bring home.
    • Don’t use food as a reward. But a good reward could be a fun and healthy activity.
    • Don’t bring junk food into the house, avoid the temptation. If it’s in the house someone is going to eat it. If you are ever going to allow soda, allow it outside of the house.
  • Create times and traditions when the family is active together. Make it a good habit.
  • Good food doesn’t have to taste yucky. Help your children equate healthy food with yummy food and you’ve won half the battle.
  • When you want your child to be active you have to offer active things for them to do while being independent from you. So instead of plugging in the video where they sit and watch a movie, try kids exercise video.
  • Allow your child to help you cook healthy meals or get healthy snacks together for an outing.
  • Limit your child’s downtime activities like watching TV, playing video games and surfing the Internet. These activities can lead to a sedentary lifestyle that is unhealthy. While the activities themselves can be beneficial, limiting time for them and keeping your kids active is the best way to go.
  • If your child is a preteen or teen, take a healthy foods cooking class together. Many communities offer these types of classes and their great one-on-one time with your child.
  • Purchase a healthy foods cookbook for kids. Then encourage your child to make something in the book with your help.

I hope these tips will help you in your family begin to eat more healthily and be more active. If you have some tips to share with our parenting community, please leave them in the comments below.
